HORECA  IN AGREEMENT WITH THE RIEU-CODE
                                            translation John deJong

The Horeca (HOtel, REstaurant, CAfe) bosses from around the Vrijthof will put their signatures to a
Code-of-Conduct which will be in effect when Orchestra leader and violinist Andre Rieu performs on the most
famous square of Maastricht. This agreement will guarantee that the performances will not be interrupted by
people on the terraces who create disturbances due to excessive use of alcohol.

The last Rieu concerts were blemished by noisy spectators who were an irritant to the visitors of the square. For
the orchestra leader this embarrassment was a hint to depart Maastricht. Rieu is some one who likes to be in
control, and wants to present a very pleasurable evening to his fans without any distractions. When he heard that
people left the concert angry because of noisy terrace visitors, for him that was enough.

Through the intervention of Mayor Gerd Leers, who convinced Rieu a few years ago to conduct these very
successful Vrijthof concerts, a conference was organized.  It resulted in a Code-of-Conduct which was agreed
upon by all the Horeca establishments. During the concerts no drinks will be served. The last discussions will be
held Sunday morning (16 Sep) in the "Theatre at the Vrijthof", at which Andre Rieu and Mayor Leers will be
present. It will be Rieu's final decision if the concerts will continue at the Vrijthof in 2008. According to Lei Meisen,
a spokesperson for the city, everything looks favorable. "Everyone is participating. A few details still have to be
ironed out, but in general everything looks good. It is now up to Andre to decide".

The Vrijthof concerts of Rieu this past July were marred by several incidents. Although the police denied any
knowledge of a fight during the concerts, two witnesses came forward to this newspaper and confirmed a noisy
fight at the west end of the Vrijthof. Some of the Horeca personnel might have been involved.

When it started to rain on the last evening of the concerts, a ghastly atmosphere arose at the square. Despite a
request from Rieu not to open umbrellas, his request was ignored. Concert attendees had their view of the stage
blocked, and they protested loudly. In a few instances the concert security had to step in and prevent angry
disputes. These incidents for Rieu were the foundation of his consideration to discontinue his concerts at the
Vrijthof. Gerd Leers was in agreement with his decision, but also provided for a solution

Maastricht 7 September 2007

The Horeca proprietors of the Vrijthof will come together in the coming week to create new regulations in limiting
the noise levels during the Rieu concerts. If they agree on a workable proposal, the chance is great that the Andre
Rieu concerts will continue on the Vrijthof next year.

That was the result of a meeting between Mayor Gerd Leers of Maastricht, and the proprietors of the Vrijthof
Horeca, which was organized by the Mayor on 6 September. Gerd Leers called the proprietors together after it
was learned that, during the concerts this past July, several terraces produced so much noise that the musicians
could not perform properly and the concert attendees could not enjoy the concert as they should.
Because of that situation, Rieu wanted to discontinue that summertime concert tradition. The ticket sales have
also been suspended.

The proprietors were unanimous in their huge interest in having the concerts continue, and promised to create
code of conducts, which will contain concrete rules as to what is allowed and what is not.

These agreements will contain amongst others, that serving will only be allowed before, after and during
intermission of the concert. In addition, groups of people will not be allowed, and those who are not behaving
accordingly, will very strongly be advised regarding their behavior. The proprietors will also include sanctions in
the agreement, should the rules be broken.

If the proprietors are successful in creating a firm and decisive agreement, they, the city and Andre Rieu will sign
that agreement on Sunday 16 September.

"King of Waltz" Andre Rieu in Australia for the first time

Dutch "king of waltz" André Rieu is visiting Australia for the first time this month, coming to Sydney on September
19 and 20, then to Melbourne to promote his first Australian tour in 2008 with the quaintly named Johann Strauss
Orchestra. But Rieu maintains the suspense when it comes to tour dates and the program: these won't be
announced until he appears on Australian TV.

The 57 year-old violinist and conductor, international star of light classical music, has been a phenomenon in
Europe, America and Japan since the release of Strauss & Co in 1994. Catching up with this trend, Universal
Music says that the number of Australian fans has soared in the last year. It's their first chance to see the man
whose CDs they've been buying in truckloads.

"André's success in Australia is unmatched in chart history. The domination of the Australian DVD chart is an
absolute phenomenon in terms of sales. On August 6, Rieu's Aria was in the Australian Top 10 and his last DVD
release in October 2006, New York Memories has made double platinum here.

André Rieu's accessible music, romantic performances, melodramatic staging and lavish costumes - his future
shows even include Viennese ballet dancers, ice dancers and actors on stage - have given him pop star status.
He has sold 23 million CDs and DVDs worldwide and won the World Music Awards in 1996 and 1998.

Rieu has something of the pop star: romantic wavy hair, broad telegenic smile and trademark tuxedo, swooning
fans and those spectacular concerts.

"At one of our concerts you'll see me and the orchestra, and the audience too, all having a lot of fun together.
Swaying with the music, humming along, clapping, jumping up and down", he says on his website: it's not exactly
the Stones but millions simply don't care.

Rieu's desire to bring the classical repertoire to a large popular public goes back to his childhood experience as a
conductor's son: "I can remember being surprised at the sombre atmosphere during the concerts ... even though
the music seemed to me to radiate so much joy!"

Although this will be Australia's first sighting of Rieu in the flesh, he's been a prolific artistic with 19 CDs released
here since 1994. And in case that's not enough, before the end of the year, another five albums and DVDs are
promised with Wonderful World scheduled for November release.

Andre Rieu is 100% correct if he wants to discontinue his performances at the Vrijthof due to excessive noise
created by the cafe patrons. That is what Mayor Gerd Leers says, who views the complaints very seriously. "Now I
want to make agreements with the cafe/restaurants proprietors that are set in stone, even if it means penalties
through sanctions".

The violinist is considering canceling the fourth edition of his open air concerts at the Vrijthof, due to excessive
noise, which occurred during the July concerts.

According to Rieu's tour manager, the agreement made with the horeca (hotel, restaurant, cafe) proprietors was,
that no alcoholic beverages would be served during the concerts, and that was broken by a few cafes.

Rieu had a meeting with Leers yesterday. It was agreed upon that Leers has two weeks to come up with better
agreements with the Vrijthof restaurants/cafes proprietors. A decision will be made after that time frame.

Leers backs Rieu all the way. "Some one of his stature should expect quality. Their are groups of people who start
their own party at the Vrijthof and use Rieu's music as a background. That is very disturbing".

Leers will meet with the proprietors this week and will again strongly re-emphasize that no alcohol will be allowed
to be served during the concerts. That is nothing more than normal. You don't walk around with drinks in a theatre
either. The cafes will have to restrain themselves.  It is a give and take situation. If they want trouble, than the city
will strictly enforce the agreement".

"The horeca proprietors at the Vrijthof are doing everything they can to have Rieu continue with his concerts at the
square next year"' says Berry Kuzelj, president of the United Vrijthof horeca proprietors and spokesperson for the
horeca organization "Aux Pays Bas".  Kuzelj says that he did not hear of any complaints. "During the last concert
performances I worked three days, fifteen hours per day. I did not notice any intoxicated persons at all. We kept
our agreement and did not serve any alcohol during the concerts. Maybe it was a rumor started on the other side. I
don't know. I will go and investigate Monday to find out where this started. We have to use all means possible to
keep Andre Rieu at the Vrijthof. Not only because of the potential earnings, but also for the continued image that is
portrayed by our city, Maastricht". Cafe-restaurant  owner Rob Mulleneers of  "De Perroen" on the other side of
the Vrijthof indicates he has no knowledge as to where the complains originated.

I was sent the following link by a young lady who worked at the concerts in Maastricht.

Once on the site click on the small TV under the article.
Andre says: "I want to make it very clear that I will not do it this way anymore!
Andre: " Things are starting to slip to ,,,,that I am a supporting orchestra at the party on the Vrijthof and that is of
course not the case.  I spoke to mayor Leers and he is totally in support of me and we have to together talk about
this seriously and we will see how it goes from there.
Andre says that 4 cafes kept serving alcohol.  When the TV reporter called all the horeca on the Vrijthof, they all
denied that they served alcohol during the concerts.    .

Rieu Concerts at the Vrijthof in danger

Andre Rieu may decide to discontinue his concerts at the Vrijthof in Maastricht. It has come to the musicians
attention that some of the participating cafe/restaurants of the square are not agreeing with the stipulations of the
contract during his performances, and are serving too much alcohol.

This was confirmed by Kerstin Cornelis, Andre Rieu's tour manager. The ticket sales for next years concerts,
which would have started in September, have for this reason been postponed. Rieu has a meeting with
Maastricht's mayor Gerd Leers about this problem. "It is quite an annoyance", say Cornelis. "The agreement was,
that no one would serve alcohol during the performances. But the last few years,  two or three cafe owners are not
adhering to their contract. It is always the same corner. The drinks flow freely, with the results that several people
have become quite intoxicated. Which resulted into many complaints from the concert attendees. As a concert
organizer you want to be sure that everything runs smoothly".  Rieu hopes that the meeting will have positives
results according to Cornelis. "We find it fantastic to be able to perform in Maastricht, but it can not run amuck.
And if we cannot resolve the problem, than we are very, very sorry".Andre Rieu performed his concerts this year at
the Vrijthof on 6, 7 and 8 July. Next year would be his fourth year.

Read in the Dutch paper 'de Limburger'
"Rieu wants to perform with a Sissi palace that can be disassembled as decor"
The Waltz king of Maastricht Andre Rieu has big plans for the future.   He wants to organize Mega performances,
with as decor the famous Palace Schonbrunn in Vienna.    "I can see us play in football stadiums for 50.000
people, with as background the magical palace from Sissi.   It is going to be gigantic, with measurements of 420
feet wide and 102 feet high", according to the violinist and orchestra leader.   Last year during a performance at
the real Palace Schonbrunn in Vienna, thousands of people moved and danced to the music of the performer of
the popular classical works.    Rieu also wants to tour in Australia and South-America.   Last year he performed in
North-America, and for 2007 there are four tours planned in the US and Canada.
