Andre Rieu Soap Part 4
On the road to New York ( January 26, 2007, Dutch TV TROS)

Andre is driving an airport cart, (with Frank Steijns, Sanne Mestrom, Jean Sassen
and his wife, Pierre Colen and Nathalie Bolle? ), in a big hall. He is driving
backwards (the alarm sounds) and he says: What an awful sound, this “beep”…..
And forwards again: “Let’s hit that camera-crew!”.
INTRO
On stage, before a rehearsal, some orchestra members are saying something to Andre, who does not understand it
at first: “What’s up, please?” The stage is moving! It moves?
Other orchestra member: I have also noticed it, the whole stage is shaking.
Andre: I have not noticed it yet. Stand still, please. Yes, now I feel it as well, it rocks a little.
Andre to the stage manager of the hall: Can you assure me it will not end up like the Titanic?
The Titanic scene in Pittsburgh… And Andre imitates a capsizing ship (orchestra).
Apparently the Pittsburgh Hall is close to the airport so every now and than a plane passes overhead. Wim van der
Molen of the sound crew: David, what are you going to do against that airport, power?
David: You cannot shut them down!
Wim van der Molen says: It is not that loud that we cannot hear the music any more, but it is unpleasant to have the
sound of a plane during a nice piece of music.
A loud bang sounds, Andre to Kerstin: Wow, that plane just hit the roof with
his wheels!
Kerstin: What was that??
Andre: That was the plane, I think!
Kerstin: O, I think he missed the runway….
Andre: It is an advantage that they are landing! If they were climbing, the sound
would be 20 times worse!
Roos Aerts, stage manager: about the shaking stage: I don’t think it is a real problem. The whole construction just
moves a bit. It never hurts to check again. (We see the Pittsburgh crew working underneath the stage).
The Pittsburgh stage manager: It is okay, no more problems.
Andre: I think I am a happy man that I can and may do this. That with together Marjorie, who I has been by my side
now for 31 years, I have been able to built this from the bottom up. No manager ever told me: “I shall make you
famous!” To drop you 2 years later….. I have done it all myself, from the start, we had time to let it grow. I think it is
very important that I was able to take time to reach this goal .
Some people think I should “walk beside my shoes” (Dutch expression, meaning becoming arrogant, comparable
in English with being too big for your britches) or why do you not move to New York City with all my money…. But
that is nonsense. What a ridiculous question, why should I start walking beside my shoes or why should I now live
in New York, I am the same person as before.
Pierre: I watch the concert almost every night. Maybe you will say that is boring? But it never is! I like it. This is
what we do if for.
I see how the audience gets enthusiastic, how they dressed up for this evening. Maybe they bought a new dress
or suit for this evening, bringing the kids and Oma and Opa (Nanna and Grandpa) along. They all come for what
we have built here together. This gives us a real “drive”.
A mother from the audience: I brought my daughter because she plays violin and she loves Andre. It was just
fantastic, We enjoy the whole thing, we danced, sang and we just had a great time.
To her daughter: Say Hi to Andre, Andre, we love you!
Outside but still in the hall, Andre is giving autographs to some people.
A mother: This is Elisabeth, she plays the violin.
Andre: Hi Elisabeth!
Mother: You are signing her music book. Her music teacher will be very happy.
Can you sign this program as well?
Andre: Yes, I can.
Mother: At what age did you start playing the violin?
Andre: At 5. and (to Elisabeth) you? How old are you?
Elisabeth: I am 7 and I started at 5.
Andre: So you have played for 2 ½ years now.
Andre to the camera crew: Once we were waiting at the rear of the hall to enter, there was a father with a little child
who said: because of you she started to play the violin.
There are lots of children who started to play, due to this "waltz craze". I use to say on stage: “if everybody should
make music…… I am serious. It does not matter which age you start to play, but a whole new world opens up. It will
be an enrichment to your life. You can do lots of nice new things, playing together. I can recommend this to
everybody.
In the meantime we see pictures of Andre posing with people for the photo.
We see some video of the busses.
Then we see somebody walking. Only the legs and feet. We see black pointed shoes. (Music is playing: these
boots are made for walking) It is Bela Mavrak, the Hungarian tenor. He enters a shoe shop. Looking for crocodile
leather shoes. He is fascinated by shoes, he is buys the most eccentric models. He shows the price of crocodile
leather shoes: $ 600! He is fitting a pair of black shoes with square noses. While he is paying for the boots, he
says: Crazy, he?
Leaving the shop: “So, now I am going to sing….”
Bela (speaking German) about the three Platinum Tenors: It is very nice to work with Andre and the orchestra.
They are all friendly and also funny persons. I am very cheerful myself and that is makes for a good match.
In the meantime he arrives at the hotel, where several JSO members (Kalkie Schrijvers, Linda Custers, Thomas
Greuel and Suzan Erens) are outside. He wears his new shoes and they admire them and laugh.
Thomas (one of the three Tenors) says: Ah, a super bargain! Very nice.
Suzan: When it comes to shoes, he is just like a women! We buy many shoes, but Bela beats us all! It is fun.
Every time he has new shoes, preferably crocodile leather. Great!
Nadejda Diakoff (Nadia) says in French: There are men, there are women, and there is Bela!
Agnes Walter says in German: He is even worse than women!!
Linda Custers: I don’t always like his taste, but it suits him, he wears them with flair.
In the hotel lounge a few JSO members are typing with their laptops (Ruud noticed to his pleasure they all had
DELL computers! Ruud is works for the DELL company European headquarters in Amsterdam).
Hanneke Roggen: Look, my boyfriend has bought a new motor bike, which you can see here! He just got it.
Cameraman: You now have contact with him?
Kremi: Yes, right at this moment!
René Henket: If you are away from home a lot, I think it is important to have good
communication with the family back home. This way is really fantastic.
Mireille Brepols: I am calling my brother. His wife is about to give birth, so I want to
stay on top of it.
Carla Maffioletti says in Dutch with a lovely accent: With my mother in Brazil.
Hopefully she is at home. We always call. When I am on line and she is as well,
we call. Does not matter what time, very nice. I hope she is there.
Carla: I am Brazilian, but I also have Italian blood. My father is Italian. I studied for 2 years at the Conservatory of
Music in Maastricht. Afterwards I went back to Brazil again. Then suddenly Andre himself was on the phone,
asking: “Do you want to join me on tour”? I was completely in shock! I immediately said YES. And now I am here,
this is my 4th year already. Really neat!

Carla: We have a concert in Chicago. At the same time my mother is in Baltimore
for a congress. She will attend the Chicago concert. We will talk, cuddle, have
breakfast and than she will have to go again. But this one day will make me very
happy. I can see my mother! With those small pleasures you can keep going.
My heart is filled with energy again…
Andre is tasting wine, looks into the glass, says: Nice color! Tastes: “We take this one, it is very nice”. With the
bottle in his hand (apparently he is pouring the wine into the glasses of the JSO members) he points to Bela who
we see on his back. He is sitting at the table wearing a black jacket with big red skull and bones on his back.
Andre (in German to Bela): Bela you are on television now.
Bela turns around asking: “What have I done?”
Andre: Stay seated. Have you shown your shoes already? Andre is looking at Bela’s shoes: No, that other pair.
Pitty!
Bela: They followed me. (I think he meant the camera crew)
Andre: You should show them your collection. To the camera: Everywhere he goes, he buys snake leather shoes,
he thinks…..
They are all real?
Bela: No, crocodile leather.
Andre: Real crocodile leather for 10 Euros a pair! But he really enjoys it!
A while ago I had a pair of crocodile leather shoes custom made for me. Because I
have two different feet I have my shoes made for me, so my toes won’t hurt. I once
had a pair of crocodile leather, but they were completely “wrong”. I wore them once
during carnival, dressed as a mafia guy with big cigar and those shoes were perfect
for that. I have given them to Bela and he was thrilled. I have noticed him wearing
them once in a while.
Bela to the cameraman about Andre: He has nice and exclusive shoes as well, but he won’t admit it here! (We
know about Andre's blue and red shoes)
Andre about Bela: He has a nice personality, a fantastic person. All three tenors are great guys. Crazy guys, and
great to work with.
The others: Gary is from Australia, Tasmania. He has a beautiful high pitched voice.
Thomas is from Düsseldorf, Germany, where he sings at the opera. He has a warm tenor voice.
Those three together, you have no idea how well they sound, so beautiful, such a beautiful sound....
(Pictures and sound of “Torna a Surriento”, sang by the three tenors).
Andre: If you could hear them squabble….. I have to say: “And now is it finished”.
Also during the rehearsals: “You held that high note much longer than I did…
I looked at that and thought: “They are suppose
to be adults”. Really funny.
We see pictures and hear Bela squabbling
(in German) to Gary. Andre says to Bela:
“You have a very nice voice...when you are
singing!”
Dacapo, from the start………
A plane is comes over again. The orchestra imitates the sounds on their instruments. At a funny sound Andre says:
“Engine trouble?” Suddenly a bang of the percussion. (did they shoot him, or did he crash?). Andre says: “A nice
preparation for the flight of tomorrow”.
Andre: Humor places things in perspective. People often ask: Is it difficult to be famous? Absolutely not. I place
things in perspective. What is “being famous”? For me it is nothing. It is people who make you famous.
As a young child, in my mind, I would move up from earth into space and would look
down at it…. I saw a small ball and I would think: You cannot see borders, races,
differences. That’s what I still do. I have to. As a leader of the gang I have to make
sure we can give a concert tonight, but also next week and 10 years from now…..
I have to evaluate all those different points of view.
That is what I want to do on stage as well, a bit from the distance. Not too serious.
At the same time I take my job serious, but not myself.
Montreal concert.
Bonsoir Mesdames et Messieurs!
Good evening ladies and gentlemen! And than I hear no reaction. Every year it is the same! If I continue in French
we get piles of letters afterwards “I did not understand…..” Andre is tuning the instruments with Luca.
Pierre: I know for sure he is nervous. Every evening and for specials it is worse.
Or tomorrow for instance. After touring 4 weeks in the United States,
he has to speak French in Montreal. It is already in his mind for a few days.
Tomorrow he still has time in the bus to rehearse his texts. But tomorrow he has
to do it in French! Rather him than me. Absolutely!
We see pictures of Andre backstage, mumbling to repeat his texts, nervously
walking to and fro.
Andre: Good evening ladies and gentlemen (in French and English). My orchestra and I, we are going to surprise
you tonight. We are going to surprise you with romantic melodies.
Pictures of the buses on tour. Andre is sitting on a wall. Orchestra members are playing ball games in a picnic area.
Ruud Merx and Cord Peters are having a romp, shouting: Germany against Holland! Roel van Veggel takes a
potato chip from Frans Neus. They are all having a good time. Andre is taking a pictures (with a big telephoto
lens) of the cameraman.
In the hall: Carla shows her mother (So it must be the Chicago concert).
Manoe is with her. (Manoe and Carla are good friends and Manoe has
been to Brazil with Carla)
Carla: This is my mom. She came from Brazil. (They are kissing, hugging).
I am so emotional! Every emotion in one day! I did not see her for almost a year.
Mom: I cross the world to see Carla
Carla: It is very special, I am singing for her tonight.
Andre: Tonight it is gonna be a man’s evening! (We see “mom” in the audience) .
What makes a man’s evening complete? (Carla backstage answers: “Beer!”).
Andre: Yes, women, exactly! We brought you one from Europe. She is delightful, charming, breathtaking. She has
long blond hair, she is nice, bright, and intelligent. With a mind blowing temper. She can sing like a bird. Big
applause for Carla Maffioletti! She is going to sing die Juliska aus Budapest. (Mom in the audience is enthusiastic,
clearly telling everyone around her that Carla is her daughter).
Carla (in Dutch with a lovely South American accent): I like to sing temperamental songs with a little bit dancing,
moving, and lots of energy. I like to do something on stage: move, dance, play with the audience, clapping hands.
The more dynamic the song, the better. Wow!
Mom gives her a standing ovation.
Backstage Carla says about her mom: She is gorgeous!
At the end of the performance we see Andre eating a slice of pizza. He greets and thanks Bela, saying: “Hé,
Mama”, to Carla’s mom.
Mom says: Congratulations and thank you so much that I could come. It
was a magnificent show.
Andre: I saw you cry.
Mom: Yes, I did.
Andre: But you also did a lot of dancing. You can be proud of a daughter
like that. As a singer and as a human being. Perfect.
Carla: Thank you. To her mom: He is the best, I cannot put that in words.
Andre: It was a pleasure to work with her for the past 4 years.
Carla. It was MY pleasure. I really grew as a person. You were an inspiration, in everything!
Andre: It was a pleasure to me and to mom he says: Thank you for a daughter like that!
Carla is kissing her mom, saying: I love her. That is my mom! We go. Bye!!
Pictures from New York. (Song New York is playing, sang by Frank Sinatra). René is taking pictures in Wall Street
(with that big American flag).
Andre: I always said: If I ever move from Maastricht, it would be only to one other city in the world: New York! Can
you imagine? Look around (shows skyscrapers). See how cool this is. There is
only one city in the world where you feel things are happening. New York is an all
embracing monster, not in the bad sense. It keeps going, it can never be stopped.
Andre is crossing the street and a car honks.
Andre: Why should they honk? (whilst running to the opposite side of the street).
Pictures show the Chrysler building. Andre: This is where our new office will be!
(Roel van Veggel, manager, will run the office there).

old from Berlin, Germany.
Andre to Akim (in German): We’ll do it again, this time with smoke. Smoke will come out and you walk in this
direction, okay? Akim disappears behind the stage and enters again with a scared expression on his face, after
Mireille gave a drum roll.
Andre: Oh, I forgot to tell him that if you stand below Mireille, those drums make an awful noise. So stupid of me.
When he entered I noticed something was wrong, realizing it were those drums.
Andre to Akim: Please look in that direction. Were you afraid? Everything Okay again?? A bit scary, maybe?

Carla: This is my mom. She came from Brazil. (They are kissing, hugging).
I am so emotional! Every emotion in one day! I did not see her for almost a year.

What makes a man’s evening complete? (Carla backstage answers: “Beer!”).
Andre: Yes, women, exactly! We brought you one from Europe. She is delightful, charming, breathtaking. She has
long blond hair, she is nice, bright, and intelligent. With a mind blowing temper. She can sing like a bird. Big
applause for Carla Maffioletti! She is going to sing die Juliska aus Budapest. (Mom in the audience is enthusiastic,
clearly telling everyone around her that Carla is her daughter).
Carla (in Dutch with a lovely South American accent): I like to sing temperamental songs with a little bit dancing,
moving, and lots of energy. I like to do something on stage: move, dance, play with the audience, clapping hands.
The more dynamic the song, the better. Wow!
Mom gives her a standing ovation.
Backstage Carla says about her mom: She is gorgeous!
At the end of the performance we see Andre eating a slice of pizza. He greets and thanks Bela, saying: “Hé,
Mama”, to Carla’s mom.
Mom says: Congratulations and thank you so much that I could come. It
was a magnificent show.
Andre: I saw you cry.
Mom: Yes, I did.
Andre: But you also did a lot of dancing. You can be proud of a daughter
like that. As a singer and as a human being. Perfect.
Carla: Thank you. To her mom: He is the best, I cannot put that in words.
Andre: It was a pleasure to work with her for the past 4 years.
Carla. It was MY pleasure. I really grew as a person. You were an inspiration, in everything!
Andre: It was a pleasure to me and to mom he says: Thank you for a daughter like that!
Carla is kissing her mom, saying: I love her. That is my mom! We go. Bye!!

Andre: I always said: If I ever move from Maastricht, it would be only to one other city in the world: New York! Can
you imagine? Look around (shows skyscrapers). See how cool this is. There is
only one city in the world where you feel things are happening. New York is an all
embracing monster, not in the bad sense. It keeps going, it can never be stopped.
Andre is crossing the street and a car honks.
Andre: Why should they honk? (whilst running to the opposite side of the street).
Pictures show the Chrysler building. Andre: This is where our new office will be!
(Roel van Veggel, manager, will run the office there).

Andre to Akim (in German): We’ll do it again, this time with smoke. Smoke will come out and you walk in this
direction, okay? Akim disappears behind the stage and enters again with a scared expression on his face, after
Mireille gave a drum roll.
Andre: Oh, I forgot to tell him that if you stand below Mireille, those drums make an awful noise. So stupid of me.
When he entered I noticed something was wrong, realizing it were those drums.
Andre to Akim: Please look in that direction. Were you afraid? Everything Okay again?? A bit scary, maybe?
